Take the Red Pill: The Truth Behind the Biology of Sex

Disrupting Dinner Parties

Morpheus offers the pills in the MatrixThis is the first part of a series about the complex biological realities of sex. Though the posts build on one another, each can be understood alone.

Content note: this post contains images and language that may not be safe for work.

1. Introduction

I first learned about the social construction of sex from a lovely trans woman named Kiki.

She said, “You may have heard before that gender is socially constructed, while sex is biological. But I’m here to tell you that what you’ve heard isn’t true. Sex is socially constructed too. So are you ready for the truth? Are you going to take the red pill or the blue pill?”

Three years later, I was diagnosed by my gynecologist with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which means that my body produces hormones intermediate between “typical men” and “typical women.” What I learned from Kiki gave me context in which to understand…

Another Bathroom Cop surfaces, this time with a perverse twist

LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS

CB EmbryLEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — Another Republican politician has appointed himself Bathroom Cop — this time it’s Kentucky state Sen. C.B. Embry Jr. The senator’s action was triggered by a Louisville, Kentucky high school’s adoption of a pro-transgender student access policy last year.

Embry has introduced legislation to divvy students up according to “biological sex” and forbid trans kid from using the bathroom that doesn’t match their ‘birth sex’.  Trans kids would be limited to ‘single-stall’ restrooms.

Here’s the perverse twist: Embry proposes that each student “offended” by finding a trans person in their school bathroom will be entitled to $2,500 from the school.

There’s other ugliness in this legislation, including the senator’s insistence that his bill demands ’emergency’ legislative action, but the ridiculous idea that schools pay out money to “offended” kids makes Sen. Embry an automatic entry into the Transphobe Hall of Shame.

Islamaphobia, Mohammad and the criticism of Islam

Rachel Johnson

The killings in France have reignited the hate for Islam, and the bombing of a German news paper didn’t help, but add fuel to the fire. Now, like gun legislation, people are picking sides, and out screaming each other, without even the thought of common sense coming from their mouths. So let me set you straight on a few things.

Phobia: the rational/or irrational fear of something.

Is it rational to fear Islam? It is rational to fear anything that calls for the death and stoning of people. It is rational to fear people with ideologies of hate, and that doesn’t mean just Islam. Though, you should take note, there exists not nuance for fear of Christianity, like Christianaphobia.

Does that mean you should hate Muslims? Only if you are content to throw a blanket over one people and hate them all based on the fact that some of them…

“Transparent” Golden Globe winners thanks trans community; dedicates award to Leelah Alcorn

LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS

jeffrey tambor jill solowayLEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — Jill Soloway, the creator of the trans-themed TV series “Transparent,” won a Golden Globe for the best comedy television series Sunday night. Soloway has a trans parent and she dedicated her award to Leelah Alcorn, the trans teen driven to suicide by her conservative Christian parents. Jeffrey Tambor also picked up a Globe for his portrayal of a trans character “Maura Pfefferman” in the same series.

Jill Soloway: “This award is dedicated to the memory of Leelah Alcorn and too many trans people who die too young.  And it’s dedicated to you, my trans parent, my moppa. You’re watching at home right now. I just want to thank you for coming out because in doing so you made a break for freedom, you told your truth, you taught me how to tell my truth and make this show. And maybe we’re going to be…

Christian writer says we’re members of the “sexual anarchy movement” with a “tyrannical agenda”

LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS

gina millerLEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — We are? I suppose she’s entitled to her opinion and on the off chance that perhaps she had a valid point or two, I started reading her article.

Step aside, Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann, there’s a new gunslinger in town. Gina Miller, a conservative Christian political writer, is the newer definition of bat-sh*t crazy!

From a discussion standpoint, the first two paragraphs alone have so many argument fallacies that I just stopped keeping track. Miller’s statements are those of the kind made in the “comments section” of mainstream media — where the “Jerry Springer Show” lives.

Most of us in the intellectual section of our society don’t dwell there, but many who do, also vote. Hence the need to not entirely ignore what Miller and others of her ilk are doing. Continuing to educate our community at large is one of our…

Remembering Leelah Alcorn: a round-up of links

Another angry woman

Content warning: This post mentions and links to content discussing transmisogyny and suicide

You will have likely heard of the tragic death of Leelah Alcorn and perhaps seen her suicide note and the reaction of the mother whose behaviour directly caused Leelah’s death. As a cis person, I have little to add personally, but my own sadness that this happens not just to Leelah but to countless other people in her situation. All I can offer is a round-up of the words of others who understand the situation better than me, because they have lived it. I also want to signpost that tomorrow, 3rd January, there will be a vigil for Leelah at Trafalgar Square at 1pm if you wish to come and pay respects.

Listening to the Living and the Dead: Ruminations on #justiceforLeelahAlcorn (b. binaohan)

To save trans lives; listen to Leelah (Natacha Kennedy)
